Game Boy for your Smartphone? Yes, Please!

In Custom Apps, Hardware, Mobile Industry

If you came to our blog today expecting to read about SMB trends, industry conferences, or point of sale solutions, sorry to disappoint. Sometimes, you just have to blog about awesomeness.

We came across this article on about the Hyperkin SmartBoy, which, literally, will let you turn your smartphone into a 2017 version of the Nintendo Game Boy. For those younger readers, before there were handheld gaming options like PS Vita, Nintendo DS, tablets or smartphones, there was one handheld video game system that ruled them all – Game Boy.

According to this BGR, the Hyperkin SmartBoy is a hardware accessory that will allow users to play their old Game Boy cartridges and use your smartphone screen to play. It comes with all of the old-school buttons as well.

As mentioned in the article, the product page lists these specs:

  • Plays GB and GBC cartridges
  • Classic style buttons and game play style
  • Game resolution automatically upgraded to phone’s resolution
  • Designed for Samsung’s S8 line and up
  • SmartBoy is also compatible with other Google Play apps and games

We’ve seen hardware accessories become a big part of smartphone innovation over the last couple of years, but this one of the coolest retro innovations we’ve seen with backwards compatibility with games from the early-mid nineties (20 plus years old).
